We use many different methods to communicate with our students and one such way is the blog. The wiki was a bit sticky in some ways as two way communication wasn't always easy and the same can be said for VLE platforms, but blogging provides an interesting way in which to communicate.
One such blog is the Access to Languages blog where students study for a whole year with us taking four different subjects.
By the nature of what we have been studying in class it is natural that topical issues will come up. Sometimes we aren't able to chat about topical issues as we run out of time, but students have been enthusiastic about how they can use their blog. It isn't mandatory and sometimes the info can be off-topic but there is a sense of community in what is being discussed.
Some of the things we have been discussing on the blog include the ipod generation, digital books, plagiarism, mobile 'phone exam cheating, film reviews, feedback, study at Higher Education level, fonts as shorthand.
More and more people are contributing to the blog and I am glad that students feel this is a place where they can reflect on what has happened within the classroom, engage in some lively discussion and feel that there is no censorship in what they post (within reason of course.)
The link to that blog is http://access1112.blogspot.com/
